The $20 Bill and Change: Keeping Your Value Intact

Change is constant in our life, it can be self-imposed or inflicted.  At times, change can be overwhelming and unsettling.   The calm right before any big change in your life can sometimes feel like a crisp $20 bill, it has a good smell, the corners are not bent, and it feels good in your hand.  Then the change comes.  If feels like you might be losing something. That metaphorical $20 bill is now broken in to “change” it’s a $10 bill, a $5 bill and 5 $1s.  You feel scattered, uncertain and not as whole as before. There is an undercurrent of fear and doubt in your life.  These feelings are normal, but they are not necessarily true.

Your mind can and will play tricks on you but the truth is, you still have $20.  Your value has not diminished, it’s just been redistributed.  Instead of focusing on what you think you lost in the change, focus on seeing what you have and how can you use it differently.

That $10 bill might be a strength like faith, resilience or problem solving  that you need to lean into more to help you navigate the change.  The $5 bill might be a skill like communication or creativity that you haven’t fully tapped into, and those ones, although small, they are mighty resources that add up, like habits or people in your life.

When changes come into  your life, don’t get stuck in the breakdown, hold on to the pieces, because together they keep you whole.

What strengths, skills, habits or resources can you rely on to help you navigate, change?  Take inventory now and build a strong foundation for you to stand on the next time change comes your way.
